ANXIETY & FEAR

The night that fears tomorrow

Lying awake dreading tomorrow, most of what frightens you hasn't happened and may never. Worry doesn't prepare you for the day ahead; it just spends tonight's sleep. The practice is to carry only today's share of it.

It's past midnight and tomorrow is already sitting on your chest. The meeting, the reply you didn't send, the thing that could go wrong. Most of what keeps you up tonight hasn't happened, and may never.

Worry disguises itself as preparation. If I run it one more time, I'll be ready. But worry poses as preparation, and it only tires you before the day begins.

Anxiety borrows from tomorrow at tonight's expense. Anxiety spends tonight's sleep on a day that isn't here yet.

You can't think your way to the bottom of it, because worry isn't a problem to solve; it's a feeling asking to be noticed.

So the practice isn't to defeat tomorrow tonight. Carry only today's share; tomorrow will hand you its own, and you'll have more to meet it with than you do at 2 a.m.

Name the one thing you can actually do in the morning, and let the rest wait outside the door until then.

If tomorrow frightens you tonight, it isn't weakness. A fearful night isn't weakness; it's a caring mind running a little too far ahead. You're allowed to call it back.

Most of what keeps you up tonight hasn't happened, and may never.
